The definitive guide to the best Mother's Day celebration

It's all about making mum feel special on Mother's Day, May 8, and there are as many ways to do that as there are mothers.

Call me a sentimental fool, but Mother's Day is always marked in my household with a celebration and gifts, sometimes unexpected.

I grew up making exotic treats for my mum and serving her breakfast in bed.  She always applauded my early attempts at cooking exotic treats such as a frog in a hole (egg in fried bread). My children have always done the same for me.

Mother's Day essentials

These are my best tips for a memorable Mother's Day for your family.
  • Be organised and book ahead.  This is not a day to leave things to chance.
  • Round up all members of the family so mum will feel the love
  • Plan a gathering that suits both mum and the family dynamic so everyone has a good day.
  • Presents are nice but it's the thought that counts here.

Don't know where to go? Here are some Brisbane suggestions based on your mum's personality.

Retro queen

Room with Roses

Does she like doing things properly, the old fashioned way, or just enjoys a good cuppa and cake? Try the Shingle Inn  (City Hall store only) or Room with Roses  for afternoon tea.

If mum grew up in Brisbane she would probably have dined at Giardinetto, a 50 year-old veteran Italian Restaurant in Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley for hearty Italian fare.

Get it over early

Yes, you may have to get out of bed earlier than usual but the up side it that even the smallest members of the family are usually in a good mood in the morning. Here's 10 top weekend breakfasts out of Brisbane to try.

Kooroomba Vineyard and Lavender Farm

View

There's nothing like an outlook while you enjoy a meal and here are 10 of my favourite 'chew with a view' destinations.

QAG Cafe

She loves art

Give mum an extra treat by indulging her passion in art as part of Mother's Day.  You could wander around the Queensland Art Gallery and GOMA and then lunch at the QAG Cafe.

It's a little bit further afield, but Lasting Impressions Art Gallery in Kenilworth has an impressive display making it well worth a stop.  You could combine this visit with a drive around the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Lots of little ones

If Mother's Day for your family means a gathering with lots of small children, make it easy for all and head to a local park where everyone can have fun.  Make sure the mums are not chained to the kitchen making the food for this extravaganza by picking up some treats from your local deli and stocking up with baked goodies from excellent bakehouses such as Cake & Bake.
