How to touch yourself with a little bit of Paris

Paddington Deli and Epicerie

There's none of the haughty attitude, but there is enough of a Frenchy feeling to bring back memories of dining on the sidewalks of Paris at Paddington Del & Epicerie.

Owner Annie Pease calls it a French-inspired bistro and diners have been voting with their feet to take a seat at her tables and enjoy the fare.

Due to the enthusiastic response to her menus, Annie has downsized the deli side of things and is upsizing dining inside.  There are plans for a bar-styled area as well.

Charcuterie plate

Food here is not over complicated and the portions are moderate.  If you like your plate overflowing, you may need to order some sides.  I find the meals well balanced and satisfying.

The small plates selection includes charcuterie to share, bruschetta, scallops with a minty carrot mash and the perennial fave, crispy skin pork belly.  If you are a fan of the deep fried olives and sweet potato crisps, you will be disappointed by the news that these have been retired from the list.  It's in deference to the age of the building and the dangers associated with deep frying which made the owner's insurance company a little nervous.

Mushroom risotto at Paddington Del

Large plates include rib fillet, snapper with a crisp skin, confit duck leg and a wild mushroom risotto which is my favourite dish.

For dessert you'll be directed to the cabinet to pick from the chef's latest creations and you won't be disappointed.

The wine list is short, but often includes interesting varietals that are worth exploring and service is pleasant and professional.

The deli also opens for breakfast with another interesting menu and serves coffee and tea throughout the day, backed by a selection of goodies from the cake cabinet.
