Scout Cafe, Petrie Terrace, Brisbane

You've got to wonder why a cute little shop like this on a busy Brisbane road stood empty for 16 years.

Lucky that it's now a coffee shop, Scout Cafe, serving a very smooth drop of  New Zealand's Coffee Supreme. It's coffee just the way I like it, full flavoured but not too strong, however I was warned they will be tweaking the brew a bit, experimenting with other Supreme blends.

Scout is run by Suse Whitehouse and Candy Smith, who is the NZ connection to the the coffee. Suse is ex Cabin Essence and Scout has the same laid back and welcoming decor. There's plenty of seating inside, a combo of benches and chairs and a separate room out the back which would be good for gatherings, meetings or that sorta thing.

There's more than just coffee here but I couldn't see any evidence of it as they had been cleaned out by hungry customers.  As it was only their second day of opening and first full day of trade, I'm not complaining.  A return visit to sample the food is no chore.

The menu, as explained to me, includes some breaky standards with a bit of ju ju plus sandwiches and bagels for lunch plus a few meals.  You'll have to pop in and try it for yourself, but remember breakfast finishes at 11.30 am.

Its open Monday to Sunday 7am to 4pm.  Find it on the corner of Princess Street and Petrie Terrace at the park end of the road before you hit the Normanby.

Scout Cafe

Bottom line:  Worth exploring
Best tip: Parking on Petrie Terrace is not too hard to find.
