Stokehouse, South Bank

Eagerly awaited, Stokehouse is now open at Brisbane's South Bank with a design that takes full advantage of it's stunning river position.

Nestled almost under the Goodwill Bridge and just a spit from the water, Stokehouse has been designed by local architects Arkhefield and it shows.

The building has the subtle hallmarks of Queensland style that will make it cool and inviting during the hot summer months and open to enjoy the balmy weather during the those perfect spring and autumn times.

Stokehouse was developed by Frank and Sharon van Haandel who are responsible for The Prince of wales Hotel and the original Melbourne Stokehouse.

Chatting with Frank he revealed how welcoming the Brisbane food scene had already been to the restaurant, a pleasant change from the competitive atmosphere in other cities.

The food style is contemporary Mediterranean-inspired showcasing local and Australian produce, and the 120 seat restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days, with a kitchen that promises to stay open until 'late'.  (Hope that continues.)

There are several options including Stoke Bar with a flexible menu and plenty of room to enjoy a glass of wine while overlooking the river.

And if you really want to make a splash, you can arrive at the restaurant by boat via a small craft landing point.

The toilets deserve a special mention here - do check them out.  I'm betting Audrey Hepburn was the inspiration for the women's but would love some suggestions on who modelled for the men's

Here's what we ate -

Beef carpaccio

Crayfish tortelloni

Organic duck breast

The Bombe

Bottom line: Stokehouse is set to become the home of the long lunch. You need to check it out.
