Bavarian Bier Cafe, Eagle Street, Brisbane

"Das is sehr gut!" is the only appropriate comment regarding the latest addition to Brisbane's newly revamped Eagle Street Pier.

Upstairs, with a view over the river that would make even Aria's patrons slightly green, the Bavarian Bier Cafe offers office workers and those looking for fast and hearty food a very pleasant place to consume it.

Add a preference for local and organic produce, a good selection of unusual beers and well trained staff and you've got the ingredients for success in this part of the world and market.  The decor is smick too - a glass stein chandelier is suspended over the main bar and the Bavarian charm is complemented by blue glass, stainless steel and stained-oak floors and tables.

The beer is definitely a feature here. Made from just four natural ingredients – malt, barley, yeast and water – their 11 Pure Biers on offer adhere to the strict Bavarian Purity Laws, which date back to 1516.

Team your bier with a soft, salty and slightly chewy pretzel.  These freshly baked numbers are nothing like the pretzels you can buy at your local drinks store or supermarket. Much more yummy.

We sampled a flight of three biers and for a non-beer drinker I was very pleasantly surprised.  I could be converted.  There's also a 5 bier taste option for the more discerning beer drinker.

The Bavarian Bier Café also takes pride in creating authentic schnitzels – the meat is delivered daily, is only crumbed once an order has been taken and is prepared to perfection in a specially designed cooker.

For those craving something a little lighter, there's a range of menu options including a Crystal Bay prawn salad, house-smoked freshwater trout and roast butternut pumpkin salad.

My goal was to try some of the authentic tastes so we shared a Bavarian Tasting Platter ($25.50) with pork belly, some of the famed schnitzel and some German sausages.  The pork belly was good, very good.  As my lunch companion said "Your face said it all when you bit into that!" Salty, crunchy rind with ever so tender pork underneath.

The schnitzel was tender and full of flavour - not at all oily - and the sausages were nicely spiced - and that's from someone who normally doesn't go for sausages.

We also shared the Lowenbrau fish and chips - butterfish in a very crispy bier batter with crisp, crunchy chips ($29.50).

When it came to dessert the choices were clear - Apple strudel with vanilla anglaise ($11) and one of the specials, a pretzel pudding.  Both had crunchy, crispy bits which were a good contrast to the smooth ice cream. Pure pleasure to eat.

On the weekends the cafe opens for breakfast with a German-inspired menu that includes flavours such as grilled kassler, Bavarian sausages, weisswurste plus some very sensible and low cal options like a ruby grapefruit salad with quinoa and raspberries.

Bottom line:  A great place for a work lunch, a few beers after work, family gatherings or social events.
